Cat Food Recall

-- Cat Food Recall --

It's scary to think that there are times when it isn't safe to feed our cats the food that we've bought for them, especially from brand name companies that we have come to trust and rely upon. We all want to look after our cats the best we can, and this includes providing them with a nutritious diet that will aid their health.

When we hear about a food recall, we're used to thinking about the foods we consume ourselves. But these days we also have to be careful with the foods that we feed our cats. It can be very worrying when a food recall is put out on cat food that we have purchased for our feline friends and there are a number of reasons why the food may have been recalled.

Most cat food items have been recalled due to vitamin deficiencies. Some were lacking in potassium or contained too much zinc. There have been others that were said to have had a potential defect of Thiamine.

All vitamins are important for cats, including Thiamine. If your cat is lacking this essential vitamin he can experience some serious side effects, and it can even lead to death if left untreated.

What is the FDA doing to prevent this?

There is an ongoing investigation of manufacturers and any warehouses that have received any contaminated products. To date (early 2011), the FDA lab has done 400 sample analyses and found 21 samples of melamine.

The FDA has received nearly over 12,000 complaints from consumers nationwide and has asked the Chinese government to cooperate in investigations to determine how melamine has got into any wheat gluten.

If you aren't sure what kind of cat food to feed your cat, there are places online that have comparisons and information about all the different brands of cat food available today. Petsumer Report is an online pet food information publication that you can subscribe to in order to access this kind of information.
